On June 5th, our school came together for a vibrant and joyful assembly celebrating the Chinese Dragon Boat Festival. It was a wonderful event filled with cultural performances, learning and fun for the entire school community.
Our talented Year 6 students wowed the crowd with an energetic and colourful dragon and lion dance. Dressed in bright, traditional costumes, they moved with confidence and flair. The audience responded with enthusiastic cheers—it was a spectacular start to the celebration!
Next, students from Years 4 to 6 performed a graceful fan dance, moving beautifully in sync with the music. Their teamwork and poise made the performance calm, elegant and culturally rich—a true highlight of the assembly.
The most exciting moment came with a martial arts demonstration from our special guests, the Australian East Wu Tai Chi Alliance. Their powerful and precise moves left everyone amazed. After their incredible performance, they invited the whole school to participate in a martial arts workshop. Students and teachers joined in, mimicking the instructors’ movements with great enthusiasm. It was a fun and active way to connect with Chinese tradition in a hands-on, memorable way.
The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most important traditional festivals in China, with a history of over 2,000 years. It is celebrated not only in China but around the world. In 2009, it was recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity—an acknowledgment of its cultural importance. The festival celebrates values such as teamwork, strength, and cultural pride, all of which were reflected in our assembly.
A huge thank you to all the students who performed, our wonderful visitors from the Australian East Wu Tai Chi Alliance, and the dedicated teachers who helped organise the event. Special congratulations to our Mandarin Captains, Anujini and Eliott, for confidently and professionally hosting the assembly. You both did an outstanding job!
